End of Season 2024

With all of the oysters now planted in Hempstead Harbor, the CSHH community oyster gardening program has officially concluded its third season.

On October 2, we planted the remainder of the oysters from the two public sites, North Hempstead Beach Park and Tappen Marina. Those oysters joined the other oysters from the Hempstead Harbour Club and Sea Cliff Yacht Club, as well as the oysters from the previous two years of the program, in our designated marine conservation area. There they will continue to grow, create a habitat for other organisms, help improve water quality, and hopefully reproduce to increase the oyster population in Hempstead Harbor!

The success of the program depends on the commitment and hard work from all of our volunteers. On September 26, we held our third annual Shellebration (generously hosted by the Hempstead Harbour Club) to show our appreciation and to update our volunteers on oyster growth and preliminary plans for next season.

Thank you, again, to all volunteers who participated this year. Looking forward to next year!
