CSHH Junior Ambassadors and
Student Advocates

The CSHH Junior Ambassador (grades K-6) and Student Advocates (grades 7-12) program is a volunteer and educational experience for younger members of our community. We are looking for observers, stewards, and leaders for Hempstead Harbor and its surrounding environment. Your unique abilities and interests are welcome.

We encourage engagement throughout the year. Below is a list of suggested activities as a CSHH Junior Ambassador and Student Advocates appropriate for a range of ages. We would love to hear from you, contact us at juniors@thecshh.org.

  • Observer

    —Complete an observation survey
    (for sightings of birds, fish, invertebrates, seaweed types and color, marine mammals, land mammals, water quality conditions, and more)

    —Create art inspired by Hempstead Harbor and share it with us

    —Get a standardized rain gauge to collect and submit daily rain measurements to CSHH

  • Steward

    —Clean up garbage: choose a favorite path or park that you frequent and claim that space as trash free

    —Make garbage art

    —Play garbage-cleanup Bingo at the beach
    (Sea Cliff Beach has Bingo cards for use)

    —Volunteer data entry, newspaper clippings, etc.

    —Volunteer for oyster gardening (ages 12 and up)

  • Leader

    —Clean up garbage with friends: coordinate with other CJA members to clear trash for a specific area

    —Send a persuasive letter to a manufacturer or government representative

    —Create a targeted campaign
    (e.g., organize a single-use-plastic free day at your school)

    —Raise donations for CSHH

    —Help spread the word: tag us @thecshh on social media
